A routine shopping for a simple energy drink turned out to be a life-changing moment for a Virginia man. A Roanoke resident struck gold when he decided to shop at A1 Mini Mart on Main Street and won a 1 million dollar lottery. Nicholas Foxx was on his way to meet the family when he stopped to purchase an energy drink on September 19. Foxx ended up purchasing a few scratch-off lottery tickets from the Virginia Lottery and won a 1 million dollar prize.

Foxx was quoted by ABC affiliate WRIC-TV, saying, “I thought I was reading it wrong. You don’t know anyone who’s hit the lottery for that amount of money!”

Instead of receiving the entire $1 million award over 30 years, he opted to take the $625,000 in lump sum before taxes. The Virginia Lottery will also give a $10,000 bonus to each retailer who sells a winning $1 million ticket.

When asked about his intentions on how to use this money, Foxx chose not to disclose. As per Fox News affiliate WFXR-TV, in the ‘20x the Money’ game, there have been four top prizes awarded; this indicates that two awards have still to be claimed. The value of the prizes is reportedly between $10 and $1 million.

While the odds of winning any reward are 1 in 3.65, the top prize has a probability of 1 in 1,958,400. Meanwhile, every reward won by the Virginia Lottery is donated to K–12 school districts in the state.

In another incident, a Massachusetts man won $1 million on the Mega Millions lottery after picking the exact same set of numbers based on his birthday for two decades. A sizable lump payment of $1,000,000 before taxes was awarded to Thomas Ensko, who claimed his win at the Massachusetts State Lottery offices in Dorchester on June 12, 2024. His winning ticket was bought at Anderson’s Variety Store in Blackstone, which toasted its own victory by giving the ticket seller a $10,000 bonus. In a further interesting turn of events, his wife had also won the lottery 20 years ago.
