The death of Ratan Tata has left a profound impact on many, especially his youngest general manager at Tata Trusts, Shantanu Naidu. Naidu, a close associate of Tata, shared a unique bond with the business tycoon along with their mutual love for dogs. In an earlier interview with CNN-News18, Naidu had talked about Ratan Tata’s legacy and the values instilled within the Tata Group.
In the video, Naidu spoke about how his family’s relationship with the Tata Group spans five generations, starting with his great-grandfather. “I think it’s more generational than Mr Tata," he said. “Of the five generations of my family, I’m the fifth generation who is working for the Tatas."
He continued, “All the generations before me had regular roles like engineer or maintenance engineer there, starting from my great-grandfather. So to see all the values planted in an individual won’t be the right way to look at it, especially when it comes to the Tata Group."
Shantanu Naidu began his career at Tata Elxsi as an intern before realising his passion for helping stray animals. This led him to create reflective collars for dogs, a project that caught Ratan Tata’s attention. Their first meeting laid the foundation for a strong friendship, and by May 2022, Naidu was officially working as Tata’s personal assistant.

Naidu told CNN-News18 that the values of the Tata Group are part of a rich legacy that has been handed down through generations. “My family, having been exposed to that over generations, has allowed us to appreciate and respect that more, or have that as a central value," he noted.
“So I think that overlapping legacy, where we have always respected and worked for the Tatas, through not one or two, but five generations, puts it in a different perspective for us."
Social media was quick to react to the post.
A user commented, “Future of TATA is in safe hands."
Another wrote, “we have lost a legend. Huge respect for this man. RIP with a very heavy heart."
“Phenomenal man. RIP," a comment read.
After Ratan Tata’s death on Wednesday, October 9, the 31-year-old techie shared an emotional tribute on social media. Shantanu Naidu expressed the impact Tata had on his life, referring to him as his “dear lighthouse." “The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse," he wrote on LinkedIn.
On Thursday morning, Shantanu Naidu was visibly emotional as he rode out of Ratan Tata’s house on a motorcycle, leading the procession carrying the iconic industrialist’s mortal remains.
A video captured the moment, showing Naidu in front of an ambulance, flanked by police vehicles escorting Tata’s hearse to the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) for the state funeral.
