Many people understand the significance of sexual intimacy in relationships, yet comprehensive education about reproductive health remains lacking, leading to gaps in understanding, especially concerning women’s health. A 34-year-old woman recently disclosed her battle with a rare condition that has profoundly affected her intimate life.

At the age of 24, she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a condition that affects connective tissues. However, it wasn’t until later that she discovered she was allergic to “semen and condoms,” making sexual intercourse painful and uncomfortable. The woman shared her experience with Caters News, stating, “It’s a struggle … It’s hard to be intimate because it’s not comfortable and I can’t even use condoms.”

A semen allergy, also known as seminal plasma hypersensitivity, is a rare allergic reaction to proteins found in male spermatic fluid. She mentioned that when her skin comes in contact with semen, it causes a burning sensation. Despite her desire for intimacy, the pain she experiences has made it challenging for her to fully enjoy sexual encounters.

“It makes me upset as I didn’t even know that it was a thing that could happen because I’d never heard about it before,” she said.

After undergoing testing for 160 allergens, including nickel and penicillin, she discovered her allergy to semen.

The woman yearns to deepen her intimacy with her partner, but the discomfort she endures during intimate moments turns them into sources of concern. Despite the common assumption that using a condom could resolve the issue, she faces an additional challenge as she is also allergic to the materials in condoms.

She confessed that their intimacy is limited because of the allergies, adding that she doesn’t “want to burn” and her partner doesn’t want to make her cry, “so it’s really hard.”

The woman’s condition has also raised concerns about her ability to conceive a child. She and her partner have discussed the possibility of starting a family but are unsure if her allergies make it impossible. Additionally, the woman suffers from a blood clotting disorder, which could pose risks during pregnancy.

Despite these challenges, the woman remains hopeful and is exploring options with her doctor. She expressed, “If having a baby wasn’t an option, it would be pretty heartbreaking. At least, if I had the choice, it would make me feel better. I’m 34 now, so I’m a little older, but I still have time.”
