“The embassy has set up an emergency control room for anyone to contact in connection with the earthquake and tsunami on January 1, 2024. Please follow instructions of the local government,” the advisory said.

Japan on Monday was struck by a major 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The temblor struck the Noto region in Ishikawa prefecture on Sunday afternoon, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The Japanese meteorological agency reported a succession of 21 quakes of 4.0 magnitude or stronger hitting the nation’s central region in just over 90 minutes.
A separate report by news agency AFP said tsunami waves over a metre high hit central Japan and evacuation orders were given asking people to flee to higher ground.
The sudden earthquake and tsunami warning prompted highway closures.
Homes and businesses sustained moderate damage. Around 33,500 households around the epicentre, in Toyama, Ishikawa and Niigata prefectures, were without power, Japanese media outlets said in a separate report. The government will assess the damage and ascertain if there have been any casualties.
Tsunami waves as high as 1.2 meters (four feet) hit Wajima port in Ishikawa prefecture at 4:21 pm (0721 GMT), about 10 minutes after the strongest jolt, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
“All residents must evacuate immediately to higher ground,” national broadcaster NHK said after the quakes.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometres of the quake’s epicentre along the coast, on the Sea of Japan side of Japan’s main island of Honshu. Tsunami waves as high as four feet hit Wajima port in Ishikawa prefecture.
