The analysis found that Bengaluru commuters spend an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to travel just 10 kilometers.

In a troubling assessment of urban mobility, Bengaluru has been identified as one of the top 10 most congested cities in the world for 2023-24. According to the TomTom Traffic Index, the city ranks sixth globally, surpassing both Mumbai and Pune. This surge in traffic congestion has raised concerns about its impact on the city’s reputation as a thriving economic hub.

The analysis, which evaluated traffic conditions in 387 cities worldwide, found that Bengaluru commuters spend an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to travel just 10 kilometers. In comparison, Pune follows closely behind at 27 minutes and 50 seconds.

Bengaluru also holds the distinction of being the most congested city in the country, with the increasing number of traffic signals contributing to the growing delays. As of 2019, the number of traffic signals in the city rose to 400, up from 300 in previous years.

The global rankings for traffic congestion are as follows:

  1. London (UK)
  2. Dublin (Ireland)
  3. Toronto (Canada)
  4. Milan (Italy)
  5. Lima (Peru)
  6. Bengaluru (India)
  7. Pune (India)
  8. Bucharest (Romania)

The TomTom Traffic Index report noted a general decline in average speeds across many cities, with 82 cities showing no change from the previous year. Notably, London, at the top of the list, has an average travel time of 37 minutes and 20 seconds for a 10 km journey, while Dublin averages 29 minutes and 30 seconds.
