Mumbai: Indian equities fell at the opening bell on Tuesday with a key index starting trade lower than its last closing figure.
The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) opened at 8,707.35 points, lower than its 8,843.21 point close on Friday.
About 10 minutes into trade, it was at 8,658.51 points, 2.09 per cent or 184.70 points lower than its previous close.
At the same time, the S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was at 2,689.7 points, 1.71 per cent down from its last close of 2,736.45.
The BSE midcap index was 2.04 per cent lower, while the BSE smallcap index was down 1.4 per cent.
Overnight, a key index of the New York Stock Exchange had closed at a 12-year low.
