NLC staff on strike, even as PM assures
PM has assured that the Govt will provide for sufficient allocation of shares to the employees of Neyveli Lignite Corp.

Neyveli: In response to a request from the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M Karunanidhi, the Prime Minister has assured that while disinvesting 10 per cent of the shares of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC), the Government will provide for sufficient allocation of shares to the employees.

As desired by the employees, the shares would be allotted on a preferential basis so that they have a stake in the future of the corporation.

Meanwhile nearly 1,000 employees of Neyveli Lignite Corporation went on a hunger strike on Monday ahead of Tuesday's general strike on disinvestment issue, even as power generation was badly affected in all its units.

Members of Officers' and Engineers' Associations and 19 trade unions, including CITU, INTUC, AITUC and those associated with AIADMK, DMK and PMK, went on fast, trade union sources said.

The hunger strike was led by S Radhakrishnan, president of Engineer's Association and V Dhandapani, president of DMK trade union.

Power generation at its three units, with a total capacity of 2490 megawatts, was badly hit and production was down by 30 per cent, Assistant Manager (Production) of NLC V R Samy said.

Lignite production was also down by almost 30 per cent, he added.

In talks held on Sunday, labour unions had rejected the management's plea to call off the agitation and had decided to go ahead with the general strike from July 4 against the disinvestment proposal.
