Sensex Declines 259 Points, Nifty Ends Below 21,580 In Special Trading Session On January 20
BSE Sensex declines 259.58 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 71,423.65; NSE Nifty falls 50.60 points or 0.23 per cent to 21,571.80

The domestic stock market on Saturday, January 20, ended the special trading session in the red, with the BSE Sensex declining 259.58 points, or 0.36 per cent, at 71,423.65. The NSE Nifty also fell 50.60 points or 0.23 per cent to 21,571.80.

The equity market had opened higher in the special trading session, in line with the global markets.

Among the 30 shares on the Sensex, only 6 closed in the green. Among the top losers were Hindustan Unilever, TCS, Mahindra and Mahindra, IndusInd Bank, and HCL Tech declining up to 3.72 per cent.

The gainers on the Sensex were Kotak Mahindra Bank, which rose 2.3 per cent, followed by ICICI Bank (up 0.92 per cent), PowerGrid, SBI, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank.

The stock exchanges conducted a special trading session on Saturday, January 20, as the markets will remain closed on January 22 on the occasion of the Ram Temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya. It is a full-fledged trading session on January 20.

On Friday, the Dow and the S&P 500 set new record closing highs while the tech-heavy Nasdaq reached its best closing level in two years. Asian stocks had ended on a mixed note.

According to analysts, domestic equity markets are likely to witness subdued activity amid low participation from global as well as domestic investors.

“As the breadth of the market is very strong, we expect the stock-specific bullish trend is likely to continue. In the near term, Nifty could face resistance at 21,850, while support is seen at 21,500,” Deepak Jasani, Head of Retail Research at HDFC Securities, said.

On Friday, the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 496.37 points or 0.70 per cent to settle at 71,683.23 points. The Nifty climbed 160.15 points or 0.75 per cent to close at 21,622.40 points.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.68 per cent to USD 78.56 a barrel.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 3,689.68 crore on Friday, according to exchange data.
