Sensex sheds 103 pts, IT & auto drag
The Sensex is up 117 points at 12055. The Nifty hit an all-time high and is currently trading at 3585 up 30 points.

New Delhi: The markets were highly volatile on the F&O closing day. The Sensex crossed the 12K mark for the third time but retreated on the back of selling pressure in index pivotals.

The BSE Sensex closed at 11,835.02, up 103.51 or 0.87 per cent after touching an intraday low of 11,803.49. It touched an intraday high of 12,086.91.

However the BSE Midcap closed in the positive with a gain of 0.56 per cent at 5717 after touching an intraday high of 5778.

The BSE Small Cap index closed with a gain of 0.84 per cent at 7254.80 after touching an intraday high of 7,348.68.

The Nifty closed at 3508.10, down 47.65 points or 1.34 per cent. It hit an all-time high of 3598.95.

The CNX Midcap ended at 5022.10, up 27.35 points or 0.55 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 5068.65 and an intraday low of 5013.25.

The market breadth was positive, about 1378 shares advanced, 1089 shares declined, and 63 shares remained unchanged.

Experts believe that the repeated upmoves in the market post a fall suggest that there is more steam left in the markets.

The total market turnover recorded at Rs 81817.86 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 16,077.5 crore. The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 5306.61 crore.

The NSE F&O turnover was recorded at Rs 60433.75 crore. The marketwide rollover was high at 80 per cent, Nifty at 69 per cent. The Nifty May futures ended at 9 points premium.

It added 53 lakh shares in total Open Interest. Reliance, Tata Steel, Satyam, Sterlite and ONGC were the top trades.

Major losers on the indices were ONGC, ACC Hero Honda, Maruti Udyog, VSNL, M&M and Tata Motors.

Reliance, Hindalco, L&T, ITC and TCS were the major gainers on the indices.

IT index slipped 1.93 per cent at 4013.05. Stocks including I-Flex, Patni, HCL Tech, Infosys and HCL Info were among the major losers.

After making significant gains in the last two trading sessions the auto stocks slipped in today's trading. Stocks like M&M, Tata Motors, Cummins, MRF and Maruti Udyog lost ground. The BSE auto index fell 1.41 per cent and closed at 5421.7.

The BSE Bankex was down 0.69 per cent at 5122.05. Banking stocks including Union Bank, Bank of India, SBI, HDFC Bank and UTI Bank closed in the red.

Consumer durables stocks like Samtel Color, Titan Industries and Mirc Electronics were among the laggards. The BSE consumer durables index lost 0.81 per cent to close at 3394.

The BSE Health Care index was down 0.45 per cent to close at 3850.5. Pharma stocks like Wockhardt, GSK Pharma, Pfizer, Nicholas Piramal and Ipca Labs were among the losers.

Oil & Gas index was down 0.68 per cent at 5607.05. Stocks like ONGC, Chennai Petroleum, BPCL, GAIL and Kochi Refineries witnesses selling at the counters.

The BSE Metal index closed marginally down 0.13 per cent at 10471.6.

The BSE Capital goods index and the FMCG index were the only indices to close in the green gaining 0.6 per cent each.

IOC sold 1.92% stake in ONGC today for almost Rs 3740 crore; to make a tax-free gain of Rs 3,353 crore.

Reliance Industries, Q4 net profit was up 9.2 per cent at Rs 2,502 crore from Rs 2,292 crore. Its Q4 net profit was above the market expectation of Rs 2,175 crore.

Its FY06 net profit was up 20% at Rs 9,069 crore (Rs 90.69 billion). The company's FY06 net profit was above the market expectations of Rs 8,742 crore.

Zee Telefilms Q4 net profit was up at Rs 67.5 crore from Rs 31.03 crore.

Petronet LNG Q4 net profit was up at Rs 66 crore from Rs 7.6 crore.

Grasim Industries Q4 standalone net profit was up at Rs 263 crore from Rs 229.5 crore.
