World Heart Day was observed on September 29, and on this significant occasion, the Aruna Cardiac Care Hospital in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu took proactive measures to raise awareness about infectious diseases and promote healthier lifestyles. Dr. Arunachalam, the Chief of Aruna Cardiac Care Hospital, emphasised the importance of safety measures to prevent heart attacks and other infectious diseases, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Arunachalam noted the critical role that safety measures play in safeguarding one’s health. He discussed the prevalence of infectious diseases and highlighted the need for vigilance and preventive actions. On September 29, the Aruna Cardiac Care Hospital unveiled a mobile medical treatment vehicle named COMBAT NCD, aimed at addressing various health concerns.

Dr. Arunachalam emphasized that infectious diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and cancer, pose significant threats to individuals’ well-being. These diseases can proliferate and affect vital organs such as the heart, kidneys, liver, and brain. He emphasized that a staggering 90% of individuals with diabetes are at risk of experiencing heart attacks, underscoring the interconnectedness of various health issues.

Infectious diseases, Dr Arunachalam explained, are often linked to alterations in body fat content that disrupt metabolic processes, creating opportunities for diseases to infiltrate the body’s organs. Stress also emerged as a significant factor contributing to heart attacks, as it can substantially disrupt bodily dynamics.

Dr Arunachalam pointed out that unhealthy lifestyles are a primary driver of heart attacks. Unwise dietary choices, the consumption of low-quality food, fast food consumption, smoking, and excessive alcohol intake all contribute to the deterioration of vital organs.

As a remedy, he urged individuals to incorporate regular exercise and embrace healthier lifestyles. Notably, he highlighted that smoking is responsible for 70% of infectious diseases.

Furthermore, Dr Arunachalam emphasised that detrimental habits, particularly smoking and alcohol consumption, significantly impact heart health and increase the risk of heart attacks. The importance of breaking free from these harmful behaviours was underscored as part of the broader effort to promote heart health and combat infectious diseases.
