Thappu Thalangal, the debut of actress Saritha, was directed by K Balachander.

Tamil film Thappu Thalangal completed 45 years of its release this year. The film was released on October 6, 1978. Superstar Rajinikanth played the main lead in the film, alongside actress Saritha. The film was critically acclaimed but it was not a success at the box office.

Rajinikanth played the role of a thug named Devu, who falls in love with a sex worker. To escape from the police, Devu ends up at a brothel and takes refuge with one of the workers named Sarasu. After this encounter, they form a friendship, as they bond over the uncommon lifestyles they have. The film features a lot of tragic moments, such as how helpless Devu and Sarasu become as they try to lead a normal life. Their past keeps haunting them and hinders happiness in their lives.

Thappu Thalangal can be said to be a form of criticism of society, which does not let people like Devu and Sarasu lead a life of normalcy and happiness, which just gets clouded further because of their past professions.

Thappu Thalangal was directed by K Balachander, who is known to portray uncommon themes in his work. The cast of the film included Rajinikanth, Saritha and Sundar Raj who was seen as Soma. It was also the debut film of actress Saritha. The producer of the film was R Venkataraman and it was made under the production house Premaalaya.

The Kannada version of the film was released simultaneously, and it was titled Thappida Thala. It was produced by BA Ramanujacharya Pandit, BM Venkatesh, Chandulal Jain and Prasanna Kumar. Vijaya Bhaskar has given the music in the film. A Malayalam adaptation of the film was also made which was titled Kazhukan. It was directed by AB Raj and starred Jayan, Shubha, Sukumaran and Jagathy Sreekumar.
