Indian skipper Rohit Sharma had a dream run in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2024. He was among runs, his leadership garnered praises from all corners of the world and above all, he ended the campaign with the trophy in his hands. It was a tough tournament for the batters but the Indian skipper managed to be among the top-scorers. Rohit accumulated 257 runs in eight matches, ending the tournament as the second-leading run scorer. And once the mission of ending the drought of ICC trophies was accomplished, he hung up his boots in the shortest format of the game.
Apart from leading the Men in Blue to T20 World Cup 2024 title, Rohit also achieved several milestones and created a few world records as well.
Here’s a look at world records created by Rohit Sharma during the T20 World Cup 2024:
1st player to hit 600 sixes in international cricket: Rohit Sharma scored 52 runs from 37 balls against Ireland in India’s campaign opener in New York where he smashed three sixes. The third maximum against the Irish side on June 5 helped Rohit become the first batter in the world to hit 600 sixes in international cricket.
200 sixes in T20Is: Rohit was in red-hot form for India against Australia during the Super 8 match played in St. Lucia on June 24 and scored 92 runs from 41 balls. He smacked seven fours and eight sixes against Mitchell Marsh’s men. The fifth six during the India vs Australia fixture helped Rohit become the first cricketer in the world to hit 200 sixes in T20Is. The star batter finished his career with 205 sixes in 159 T20Is.
Most sixes against one team in international cricket: The eight sixes on June 24 against Australia in St Lucia helped Rohit break Chris Gayle’s world record of most sixes against one team in international cricket. Rohit, who has played in 80 matches against the Aussies across formats, has hit 132 sixes; two more than Gayle’s tally of 130 sixes against England.
Most runs in T20Is: Rohit scored 257 runs in eight matches of the T20 World Cup 2024 for India, going past Babar Azam and Virat Kohli’s tally of runs and becoming the leading run scorer in T20Is. Rohit finished his career with 4231 runs in 159 T20Is. Virat is next on the list with 4188 runs while Babar has 4145 runs to his name in 123 T20Is played so far.
1st captain to win 50 T20Is: India’s win in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 helped Rohit Sharma become the first captain in the world to win 50 T20Is. Rohit, who made his T20I debut for India on September 19, 2007, won 50 out of 62 T20Is played as Indian captain. Of those 50, 49 were outright wins, and one win against Afghanistan (January 17, 2024), came in a Super Over. Babar is second on the list with 48 wins in 85 T20Is.
1st captain to win the T20 World Cup with a 100% win record: India won all eight matches played in the T20 World Cup 2024, which helped Rohit Sharma create history. He became the first captain in the world to win the T20 World Cup title with a 100% win record. In the history of the ICC World Cups, only two captains, Clive Lloyd (West Indies) and Ricky Ponting (Australia), have won all the matches, but they achieved the feat in the ODI World Cup.
1st Indian to win two T20 World Cup winners’ medals: India’s victory in Barbados handed Rohit a second T20 World Cup winner’s medal. He is the first Indian cricketer to achieve this feat. Before lifting the trophy in Barbados on June 29, 2024, the legendary opening batter won the T20 World Cup title in 2007 under MS Dhoni’s leadership.
