Despite restricting South Africa to 113 in their T20 World Cup fixture on Monday, the Bangladesh cricket team failed to claim a win. The Asian side ended their innings scoring 109 at the loss of seven wickets. The defeat was heartbreaking for Bangladesh fans. And, there was a moment in the game that sparked controversy.
Bangladesh were not awarded four runs off an overturned LBW call on Mahmudullah during the final phase of the match. The decision proved quite costly as Bangladesh eventually lost the game by the same margin of runs. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has now shared his opinion on this matter.
Sharing his take on this matter, Wasim Jaffer posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), “Mahmudullah was wrongly given out LBW, the ball went for four leg byes. The decision was reversed on DRS. Bangladesh didn’t get the 4 runs as ball is dead once batter given out, even if wrongly. And SA ended up winning the game by 4 runs. Feel for Bangladesh fans.”

Reacting to Wasim Jaffer’s post, one person commented, “Only when a crucial match for Ind/Aus/ENG is impacted, we would see some corrective action.”

Another social media user replied, “Yeah. The ball becoming dead has a dangerous pretense after the inclusion of DRS. They should look at this rule now.”

Voicing a similar opinion, one social media user replied, “This rule is absurd ,If it is not out, runs should be given. Fielding team should be made aware that they have to stop the ball, not all 11 are needed for appeal.”

Providing a solution to this matter, one particular person wrote, “A simple fix to the rule would be if the umpire waits until the ball is dead to raise his finger. So if it turns out to be not-out on review, the batting team can keep the runs scored. Similar to how linesmen in football wait to raise the flag for marginal offsides.”

Mahmudullah was, eventually, dismissed on the penultimate delivery of the innings for 20 off 27 balls. South Africa’s successful defence of 113 became the lowest total ever to be defended in the history of T20 World Cup. The Proteas extended their winning run to three games at the T20 World Cup 2024.
