A video featuring Michael Atherton’s hilarious dig at Nasser Hussain’s batting lessons during the 2022 England Tour of Pakistan has resurfaced on the internet. Pakistan are currently hosting England in a three-match Test series at the Multan Cricket Stadium starting today, October 7.
Days before the series began, a video where Atherton could be seen making fun of his broadcasting partner Nasser’s batting ‘masterclasses’ was shared on Instagram. In the 2022 Tour, Nasser was asked to give a lesson with the bat every day before the Test proceedings began. Seeing the Pakistan broadcasters use his Sky Sports Cricket colleague for the lessons, Atherton was left in disbelief.

Nasser Hussain could be seen attempting a shot against a fast bowler in Pakistan. Surrounded by a crowd, the former England skipper was left surprised by a fast-ball delivery. Speaking later, Nasser expressed how even he was having a difficult time giving those lessons as he was not a batting legend like Sachin Tendulkar. “I honestly think they’ve got the wrong bloke out here. They think I’m like Tendulkar. ‘Every morning give us a master class on something.’ They’ve honestly got the wrong bloke,” Nasser jokingly said.
In the later portion of the video, Michael Atherton could be seen speaking about what he thought of Nasser Hussain’s masterclass lessons.
“Well, the Adage that ‘the older I get, the better I was’ is given perfect illustration every morning of a Test match here in Pakistan when the great man Nasser Hussain gives us a masterclass on batting,” he joked.
Speaking further, he said, “We’ve already seen him talk about how to play the sweep and the reverse sweep. We’ve seen him hitting over the top. He gave a masterclass yesterday on how to pick the ball out of the hand.”
Michael Atherton also pointed out how Nasser Hussain had often injured himself in first-class cricket but was still being treated as a batting expert. “This morning, on the flattest, slowest pitch of all time, he’s talking about how to play the short ball. A man who broke his finger on eight occasions in First Class cricket is now an expert on playing the short ball,” he said.
Michael Atherton also joked about how Pakistan TV also had West Indies icon Brian Lara on the commentary desk, yet they decided to go with Nasser Hussain to give the illustration at the Polo Ground. The 2022 series between Pakistan and England saw the Asian powerhouse concede a 0-3 defeat. Pakistan will now be looking for redemption in the ongoing three-match bilateral Test tour at home.
