'Haven't Really Nailed Down What the Batting Unit will Look Like': Rohit Sharma on Rishabh Pant's Promotion to No. 3
Rohit Sharma said the management wanted to give Rishabh Pant an opportunity and the wicketkeeper-batter grabbed it both hands.

A lot was spoken about India’s fast-bowling unit before the team turned up for their only warm-up fixture against Bangladesh on Saturday in New York. Barring Jasprit Bumrah, the likes of Siraj, Arshdeep and Hardik Pandya endured a tough IPL season and were constantly scrutinised for being expensive in the tournament. But they were in a completely different mode when they donned the Indian jersey against Bangladesh in New York.

Defending 182, the pacers were right on the money as they shared 7 wickets among each other, restricting Bangladesh to 122/9 and winning the game by 60 runs. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers who returned 2 for 12 in 3 overs while Shivam Dube returned 2 for 13. The remaining fast bowlers picked up a wicket each.

Skipper Rohit Sharma was all praise for Arshdeep who played a key role in the demolition of Bangladesh.

“He has shown us, in whatever games he has played, he has the skills up-front. He has a very good skill set (at the death too). We saw it today. He bowled pretty well, swung the ball up front, and then bowled one at the back end,” Rohit told the broadcasters.

“We have got 15 good players here. We have to see what the conditions are and then see what combination is best for us,” he added.

India didn’t have the services of Virat Kohli who arrived in the US on the eve of the warm-up fixture. In his absence, Rishabh Pant batted at number three and top-scored with a 32-ball 53 before retiring out.

Rohit said the management wanted to give Pant an opportunity and the wicketkeeper-batter grabbed it both hands. The skipper also added that the batting order for the upcoming games in the main event is yet to be decided.

“Just to give him an opportunity. We have not really nailed down what the batting unit will look like. Even the bowlers did pretty well,” Rohit said,

“Quite happy with how things went. Pretty much got what we wanted from the game. Like I said at the toss, it was important to get used to the conditions. New venue, new ground, drop-in pitch – important to get used to it and we managed pretty well,” he added.

The men in blue will open their campaign against Ireland at the same venue next week before locking horns with arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9.
