Young wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry on Sunday became the second female cricketer from Assam after Ritu Dhrub to represent India at the international level. The 21-year-old replaced an injured Richa Ghosh as India squared off against South Africa in the second T20I in Chennai which eventually got called off due to rain.
Chetry received her debut cap just a day after all-rounder Riyan Parag became the first male cricketer from the state to play for the country. Parag is currently in Zimbabwe for a 5-match T20I series which began Saturday in Harare.
Chetry was first picked for India last year for the Bangladesh T20Is and was part of both the ODIs and Test squads against South Africa. She was also a part of the contingent that won gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
The young wicketkeeper-batter has played 29 List A matches, scoring 504 runs and three half-centuries. Chetry was part of India A at the ACC Women’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup last year in June. The following month, she received her maiden India call-up for the Bangladesh tour but didn’t get a game.
Chetry made her Women’s Premier League debut earlier this year, representing UP Warriorz but played only one game. She was roped in as a replacement for injured Vrinda Dinesh in the UP Warriorz mid-way through the 2nd edition of the tournament. Her exploits in the domestic circuit, particularly in last year’s Senior Women’s One Day Trophy and T20 Trophy caught the eyes of the national selectors. She also played for India A against the England side when they toured India in late 2023.
She also happens to be an Asiad Gold Medalist as the Women in Blue led defeated Sri Lanka in the final by 19 runs.
