India beat Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test of the two-match series played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin top-scored for the Rohit Sharma-led side in the first innings (113 runs) and then accounted for the dismissal of six Bangladeshi batters in the second innings (6/88). For his superb all-round show, the Chennai-based cricketer won the Player of the Match award in the series opener.
During the match played at his home ground, Ashwin also broke multiple records. Here’s a look:
Most 5-wicket hauls in WTC: Ashwin now holds the record for taking most five-wicket hauls in World Test Championship history. The Indian star has dismissed five or more batters in an inning on 11 occasions. Australia’s Nathan Lyon is second on the list with 10 fifers in 43 matches, and they are followed by Pat Cummins (8) and Jasprit Bumrah (7).
Most wickets for India in 4th innings: By dismissing six Bangladeshi batters in the second innings of the Chennai Test, Ashwin has taken his tally of wickets to 99 in the fourth innings of Test matches for India. Legendary Anil Kumble is second on the list with 94 wickets.
Oldest to take five-wicket haul for India in Tests: 38 years, 5 days old Ashwin is the oldest cricketer to take a five-wicket haul for India in a Test match. He broke the 69-year-old record of Vinoo Mankad, who picked up a five-wicket haul for India in 1955, at an age of 37 years and 306 days.
8th leading wicket-taker in Tests: With 522 wickets to his name in 101 matches played so far, Ashwin has now become the eighth leading wicket-taker in Test cricket. He broke former West Indies pacer Courtney Walsh’s record of 519 wickets on the fourth day of the first India-Bangladesh Test.
2nd most five-wicket hauls in Tests: The five-wicket haul in the second innings is Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, which has helped him equal Shane Warne’s tally of 37 fifers. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (67) has more five-wicket hauls than Ashwin in Tests now.
2nd leading wicket-taker in WTC: Ashwin has 180 wickets to his name in 36 WTC matches played so far. He broke Pat Cummins record of 175 wickets in the first Test and is now only behind Lyon (187 wickets).
3rd most POTM awards for India in Tests: Ashwin won Player of the Match award in the first Test against Bangladesh. By winning his 10th POTM award, Ashwin has now equaled Virat Kohli, Jadeja, and Kumble’s tally. Only Sachin Tendulkar (14) and Rahul Dravid (11) have won more POTM awards for India than him.
1000 runs and 100 wickets in WTC: During his 113-run knock in the first innings, Ashwin crossed the 1000-run mark in WTC, which helped him become only the cricketer in the world after Jadeja to score 1000 runs and take at least 100 wickets in the WTC.
