South Africa managed to begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a win by six wickets against Sri Lanka at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Tuesday. Leading the Proteas bowling attack was none other than Anrich Nortje who has come back to his best form with the ball.
He won the Player of the Match award for his bowling performance where he picked up figures of 4/7 in his four overs which allowed to restrict Sri Lanka to just 78 runs.
Reacting to his performance, Nortje was pleased with how his time in the middle went about and suggested that he was feeling good for the last few games but things went his way in this game.

“This will get some momentum going. Tough few days, we’ve worked hard and it’s nice to get some momentum. Very happy, I’ve been feeling good from the last few games, finally great to have a good game and get a few wickets,” he commented.
Speaking on the performance, Nortje appreciated the performance as a collective as well as his contributions which allowed them to restrict Sri Lanka for a low total.
He added, “The guys did well to restrict them to a low score. Been a while since I got many wickets and was happy to be helpful in the team’s win”.
Speaking on the conditions in New York, Nortje says that it is vital to understand the track as soon as they can considering the tough conditions that were presented for the batters.

Nortje highlighted, “We needed to assess as quickly as possible (on the conditions), it was up and down at times (on the wicket), and I needed to hit my straps and hit the wicket hard, we needed to get some early wickets”.
The pacer suggested that they did not have much time to practice in the drop-in pitches that have been implemented in the USA and he stuck to his usual plans which is to hit the deck and bowl fast.
He concluded, “It was a tough one, practicing on these drop-in wickets is hard, we weren’t able to bowl on the pitch on the pre-match day, the plans were simple, and that helped me, I just need to get my rhythm better in the next few games”.
