Most people who aspire to pursue an MBA after graduation aim to get into an IIM. Every year more than 3 lakh graduate students appear for the CAT examination. Out of these, only a few candidates get selected and manage to secure a seat at various campuses of the Indian Institutes of Management around the country. There are 21 IIMs in India which have around 5,500 seats in total. Through CAT, students can also get admission to top non-IIM management universities in the country.

Currently, the IIMs have not yet started the admission process for the upcoming academic year. However, it is expected that the admission process will start in July. The official announcement is awaited. Candidates who failed to crack the CAT exam in 2023 can appear this year which is expected to be held in November. But is admission in the IIMs only based on the score of the CAT exam? The answer is no. A candidate is assessed based on several grounds before allotting a seat in an IIM.

IIM Admissions Shortlisting Criteria

IIMs are known as the top MBA institutions across the country. Millions of students dream of getting admission to these prestigious institutions. Here are some shortlisting criteria that is set to be followed for admission into IIMs:

The aggregate percentage scored in the Class 10 board examination or equivalent examination is assessed.

The aggregate percentage scored in the Class 12 board examination or equivalent examination is assessed.

Marks obtained during the 3 or 4 years of graduation are also taken into consideration.

Candidates from non-engineering backgrounds will be allotted extra points to ensure fair representation of students from other streams.

Candidates with prior work experience receive preference for admission into IIMs.

The assessment is also based on the score of the CAT examination.

The score that is allotted during the Personal interview is also taken into consideration.

Extra points are allotted to female and transgender candidates to encourage fair representation of all genders.
