IIT Roorkee, located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India is the oldest engineering institution in India. It was founded as the College of Civil Engineering in British India in 1847 by the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces, James Thomason. After the death of Thomason, it was renamed Thomason College of Civil Engineering. In 1949, it was renamed to University of Roorkee and was again renamed in 2001 to IIT Roorkee. To enrol here, a student has to qualify for the entrance exam with a good rank.

IIT Roorkee is now included among the top engineering colleges in the country. The educational institute boasts 22 academic departments, covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Management programs. It also offers scientific and technological education and research. IIT Roorkee runs 11 undergraduate (UG), an integrated dual degree, 61 postgraduate (PG) and several doctoral programmes. It also offers admissions to BTech, BArch and integrated MSc integrated MTech courses through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Before it was converted to IIT, students had to take the Roorkee Entrance Exam (REE) conducted on the All-India level. After IIT-JEE, REE was considered to be the second toughest engineering entrance exam in India.

Admission to postgraduate programmes in engineering and architecture is based on GATE score and written test and interview.

Apart from enrolment, once a student graduates from this institute they get a good campus placement drive with whooping salary packages. Recently, the institute was in the headlines after a student got an annual package of Rs 2.05 crore, which is to date the biggest international package in the history of IIT Roorkee.

For admission to IIT, one has to appear in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). One has to crack JEE Advanced after qualifying for the Mains examination. Generally, IIT is the priority of students who want to pursue a career in engineering. Internationally, IIT Roorkee stood at 369 ranks in the QS World University Rankings of 2023 and 114 in Asia.
