JEE 2024: Key Changes As 9 IITs And 16 NITs Discontinue Branch Upgrades
This year, 865 seats in 121 colleges are to be allotted during the JEE counselling.

After the results of the prestigious engineering entrance exam IIT JEE Advanced, the counselling process for admissions to IITs and NITs has begun. Many students struggle to choose a college option based on JEE-Main and Advanced ranks. This year, 865 seats in 121 colleges are to be allotted during the JEE counselling. The last date for filling out forms is June 18.

Amit Ahuja, career counselling expert at Allen Career Institute, said that many prominent IITs and NITs have discontinued the branch upgrade facility this year based on the student’s performance in the first year. This means that students no longer have the option to change their specialisation in these institutes.

These IITs include the leading IITs Mumbai, Madras, Kharagpur, Hyderabad, Jammu, Mandi, Bhubaneswar, Dharwad and IIT Dhanbad. Apart from IITs, 16 NITs have closed the branch upgrade option this year. These NITs include Jaipur, Allahabad, Calicut, Delhi, Hamirpur, Suratkal, Nagaland, Patna, Puducherry, Raipur, Kurukshetra, Rourkela, Tiruchirappalli, Warangal, Surat and Andhra Pradesh.

Ahuja said that every year a large number of students give more priority to the core and lower branches of top IITs and NITs than to the core branches of lower IITs and NITs. Students think that they will get admission in lower branches in top IITs and NITs and then get upgradation of their branch due to good performance in the first year. But now 9 IITs and 16 NITs have closed the branch switching option. This means that students will not be able to get admission to top IITs by upgrading their branch after the first year. With this, students will get admission by keeping the branch they are interested in on the priority list right from the beginning.

This year, counselling is being held for a total of 59917 seats. These include 17740 seats in 23 IITs, 24229 seats in 32 NITs, 8546 seats in 26 Triple ITs, and 9402 seats in 40 GFTIs. Compared to the last year, there has been an increase of 2765 seats including 355 seats in IITs, 275 seats in NITs, 800 seats in Triple ITs and 1335 seats in GFTIs.
