Days after schools resumed for students of all classes in the Union Territory of Puducherry, the administration has approved a proposal to promote them to the next class without examination for the academic year 2020-21.

According to India Today report, the decision comes after Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan gave her consent to the proposal suggesting that the students of classes 1 to 9 be declared as ‘all pass’ this academic year without the conducting exams.

“Lieutenant Governor has approved the proposal of the Department of School Education to all students of classes 1 to 9 as ‘all pass’ in all the four regions of the Union Territory,” said an official statement from the Lt Governor’s office.

Similarly, students of classes 10 and 11 in Puducherry and Karaikal regions that follow the Tamil Nadu pattern and curriculum would be promoted to higher classes and granted 'all pass' as per guidelines of Tamil Nadu State Board of Education.

Students of Mahe and Yanam regions would also be promoted according to the guidelines of the Boards of Education in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, the statement added.

Additionally, the release said, all schools will function till March 31 for classes 1 to 9 for five days a week. And they would observe Saturdays and Sundays as holidays. The summer vacation would commence for the schools on April 1.

However, classes for students of classes 9,10 and 11 will be conducted according to the schedule of examinations of the respective State Boards of Education.

This year the provincial government of Puducherry has decided to promote students to their respective higher classes without conducting examinations due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country.

Although, schools have reopened in the union territory, several parents were concerned about the exams being conducting in such testing times.
