Tension gripped the campus of Pune’s prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) on Tuesday over a banner condemning the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid.
The police said around 12 to 15 unidentified people barged into the campus around Tuesday noon. They allegedly clashed with the students, tore down the controvesial banner and burnt it.
According to the police, the banner put up by the FTII Students Association (FSA) on the campus on Monday read, “Remember Babri, Death of Constitution”.
The FTII incident took place a day after the consecration ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol took place in Ayodhya.
A case was registered against three students for “hurting religious sentiments”. The First Information Report was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 153B (1) (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), a senior official said.
Another FIR was registered against unidentified persons at Deccan police station under Indian Penal Code sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 427 (mischief causing damage), and other relevant provisions, the police said.
FSA alleged that its president Mankap Nokwoham was among those attacked. FSA, in a press release, said they strongly condemned the attack. They termed it an attack on the “democratic rights as well as the lives of students.”
