Americans scared of football and Beckham: Gullit
Gullit has shown his admiration for David Beckham's decision to join his old club.

New Delhi: Former AC Milan striker Ruud Gullit has shown his admiration for David Beckham's decision to join his old club on-loan and he believes Americans are scared soccer will overshadow sports which dominate the United States such as baseball and basketball.

The former Los Angeles Galaxy coach knows Beckham well and he believes a move to Serie A will benefit the England star, but he also has his doubts over the impact Becks has had in the states as well as whether or not he will return to Galaxy after his loan spell in Italy.

"Americans are scared of football and they don't want it to become popular because their objective is to control it at all costs," Gullit told Feel Football.

"They know it's the most famous sport in the world and they don't want it to obscure Baseball, Basketball or American football.

"David's arrival in the MLS has made an enormous difference in terms of coverage but I also have my doubts as clubs were made to have a small budget, how can you attract players on small wages?

"Beckham should be admired over his decision to go to Milan. I am curious to see how he does with the Rossoneri and what happens if he does well there.

"Will he go back to America? That's the big question everyone is asking."

The Englishman will join the Rossoneri in January on a shot loan deal before returning to Los Angeles. However, there is rife speculation that he may stay on at San Siro for longer..
