Beckham urges United to buy Sneijder
Man United's coach has so far declined that the team are in market for Scholes' replacement.

Manchester: David Beckham has revealed he considers Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder the outstanding candidate to replace the retired Paul Scholes at Manchester United.

Scholes' retirement this summer after 17 years of service at Old Trafford leaves manager Sir Alex Ferguson with a gap to fill in the centre of midfield before the new season.

Tottenham's Luka Modric and Arsenal's Samir Nasri have both been touted as possible successors to the midfielder, but it is Sneijder who appears to be the likeliest target, with Inter reportedly willing to sell to fund their own transfer activity.

The Dutchman boasts an impressive list of achievements, with domestic titles in Spain and Italy as well as a Champions League triumph on his CV, and Beckham has no doubt the 27-year-old would be a great success at Old Trafford.

"To replace Scholesy, they're going to have to get someone special," he told reporters.

"There's a lot of talk about Sneijder and he's such a talented player, I'm sure he would fit right into a Manchester United team.

"He could do a job there, without a doubt. Scholesy is the one player they want to replace. He was such a great talent and he will be missed."

One man already signed to replace a veteran at the club is new keeper David de Gea, who has been brought in from Atletico Madrid following the retirement of Edwin van der Sar.

Beckham readily admits that De Gea faces a considerable challenge to achieve the same level of success as his Dutch predecessor, but remains confident the 20-year-old possesses the right blend of experience and talent to succeed.

"I've seen them bring in the young keeper, with great experience of playing in La Liga," he added.

"He's got a huge space to fill because [Edwin] van der Sar was so successful, but I don't think that will be a problem.

"He's played at a good level in Spain and let's hope he does well because United have always had good keepers."
