New Delhi: Ramon Calderon has explained that despite all the criticism aimed at him, he left Real Madrid financially stable enough to buy Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka.
The former president left his post last year when allegations arose of vote rigging at the Assembly and with Florentino Perez back in charge, Madrid seem to be making more progress in the transfer market.
In an interview with Ona Catalana though, a proud Calderon explained how he paved the way for the capital club to make these big money moves.
"It has been shown that despite everything malicious that has been said, I left Real Madrid in an excellent financial situation. The signings that Snr. Perez are making are not coming from him, but from Real Madrid," he said.
"Snr. Perez began with €91 million when I only began with €4 million. The form of payment? Real Madrid can make those payments directly now because in these times the club has reliability, liquidity and credit."
With regards to the Ronaldo situation in particular, Calderon explained that his work last summer made this transfer possible.
"Everything was ready so that the transfer could be done this year and I am full of happiness because I want the best for Real Madrid," he mused.
"I wanted to bring him last season but I could not because Manchester United did not think it was right to sell him. He wanted to come though and the situation is good for everyone.
Good for the player because he wanted to come, good for Real Madrid because they have signed a great player, and good for Manchester United because they have a large amount of money."
