Santiago: The capital of Chile, Santiago is a city with serious problems at its otherwise vibrant heart.

It’s modern, it’s metropolitan and it’s also a drug capital where' the crime rate is very high.

However, a new sporting initiative from FIFA is helping to get disadvantaged children off the streets, away from crime and.under the global banner of football.

Jorge Riberos says, "I nearly died once because of a stab wound, I was also at the point of being shot, so my prospects were not very good. I would have ended up being convicted or being a criminal, either that or dead."

This street football project is a means of giving youngsters something to focus on and underlining the importance of a fit body and a fit mind. It's been changing people's lives since it was set up three years ago.

Pablo Hewstone says, "The CHIGOL street football project is looking to create new ways of living together in the neighbourhood, we use football as a tool, as a means to generate new ways of living together."

The young kids have now become Project managers of this programme, a prospect that seemed unthinkable a couple of years ago.
