There is no shortage of bizarre food items, and Panipuri, also known as Golgappe, often falls victim to these strange experiments. Despite its popularity across cities, foodies are generally resistant to new flavours being added to this traditional dish. Yet, another peculiar creation has emerged: “Pani Puri Shawarma”.
Well, if you are a fan of either of these dishes, consider this a warning in advance.
An X user named Mohammed Futurewala uploaded a panipuri shawarma video on the microblogging platform. According to the post, a panipuri vendor in Surat sells the unique dish by creatively fusing the two cuisines. In the video, the vendor begins by preparing the stuffing with shredded chicken pieces, salad, potato fries, and sauces. Next, he stuffs it inside the puris and tops it with chutney, ketchup, and a lot of cheese.
Ismail, a pani puri vendor from Surat, embarked on a journey to Turkey, where he was captivated by the flavors of shawarma. In his caption, the user took a hilarious dig at the panipuri combination, joking that the vendor created the “unique and delectable” panipuri shawarma after his journey to Turkey. He also noted that the dish became quite a sensation in the area, drawing food lovers from near and far. In the meantime, the now-viral video has left social media users divided. While some complimented the dish, many were left frustrated with it.
A user wrote, “We need to reduce our milk production. Baat baat pe Cheese Block nikal ata hai,” while another commented, “The part where he topped panipuri with that mayonnaise “chutney” is where I couldn’t continue watching the rest of it.”
“These street food vendors have unreal cheese obsession,” a third user chimed. Another comment read, “Actually, it’s not bad at all! When the dosa can be killed in multiple ways, I think poori too should be open to experiments.” The video has so far garnered nearly 3 lakh views.
With many more such examples on the internet, it seems like people never get tired of such experiments with our beloved panipuri. Earlier, “gold and silver” panipuri went viral from the tech hub of India, i.e., Bengaluru. Kept in a gold-coloured tray, the puris are filled with dry fruits and honey and then dipped in thandai before the final layering of edible gold and silver sheets.
