First phase of ticketing stretches from February 20 to March 31.

New Delhi: Football fans can apply for tickets on FIFA's official website with the aim of landing access to a plethora of games in the World Cup finals in South Africa.

The journey for many a football fan began, as FIFA's official website opened on Friday to applications for World Cup tickets for the very first time.

The first phase of ticketing stretches from Friday (February 20) all the way up to March 31.

For South African based supporters, there are extra opportunities to get to games through registry at FNB National Bank branches throughout the country where incentives can translate to tickets.

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke has added to the hype surrounding the greatest sporting event on the globe by stating on the world governing body's website: "The fervour is already palpable within South Africa and all around the world; everyone wants to take part in this extraordinary event. "Our ticketing policy has been drawn up to reflect our determination to ensure that FIFA's flagship competition is accessible to all football fans. We hope that you will come and enjoy the game!"

Chairman of the 2010 FIFA World Cup organising committee in South Africa, Danny Jordaan added: "The start of the ticket sales kicks off the chance for fans from all over the world to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a FIFA World Cup match in South Africa. "We have strived to give everyone a fair and equal chance to access a ticket, so that that all people around the world have a possibility to enjoy the wonderful celebration that we will have next year."

Applicants who register at this early stage have the chance of landing some of the best seats in South Africa's stadiums. It is important to note though that the scheme is not structured to a "first come, first serve," basis. As all who register during this window will be on an equal footing.
