New Delhi: Defending champions Dempo got their second win of the second phase after beating Mahindra United 3-2 in a round 20 I-League match at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa.
Mahindra United got off to a flying start and scored as early as the 25th second when Izumi Arata headed a Steven Dias cross into the back of the net, making it the fastest goal of this season's I-League.
Dempo having home advantage on their side kept attacking but were finding it hard to find the equaliser.
Their persistence finally paid off in the first half injury time when Beto equalised with a powerful shot after a good cross by Peter Carvalho from the right flank.
It took Dempo only a minute in the second half to take the lead as Beto found Ranti Martins unmarked inside the box and the Nigerian made no mistake from close range.
However, Mahindra were never out of the game and they did manage to equalise through Sushil Kumar Singh in the 66th minute.
But the Mumbai outfit conceded a freekick in the 88th minute which was coolly converted by Ranti Martins to win the game for Dempo.
This win lifts Dempo to sixth spot having taken 26 points from 18 games while Mahindra’s first defeat in eight league games still keeps them at fourth place with 27 points from 20 games.
Goalscorers: Izumi Arata (Mahindra United) 1’, Beto (Dempo) 45(+1)’, Ranti Martins (Dempo) 46’, Sushil Kumar Singh (Mahindra United) 66’, Ranti Martins (Dempo) 88’
