Manchester United’s emphatic 4-1 win over Leicester City in the Premier League may have brought back life into the Old Trafford outfit, but one major problem remains for manager Jose Mourinho.
Club captain Wayne Rooney is going through a horrendous run for the Red Devils that has seen him find the net just once in all competition so far.
Rooney was dropped from the line-up against Leicester and the result was great for the team, but not so much for the skipper.
Wayne has drawn flak from fans and pundits alike over the past few game, but the latest comment from his manager would hardly boost the striker’s confidence.
“I think Rooney cannot afford to have a performance that is not really good” Mourinho was quoted as saying ahead crunch Europa League clash against Zorya Luhansk FC.
‘The Special One’ also seems to be unsure over his captain’s regular participation in the team “I was completely convinced about playing him from the beginning. But with his situation in the last couple of days I am not so sure I will do that because of the situation you (media) create for him.”
Rooney is in line for a starting berth against Zorya Luhansk, after shaking off a minor back problem. The star forward missed the training on Tuesday but was back in high spirits on Wednesday.
Manchester United are already on the back foot in the Europa League, following the stunning opening round defeat at the hands on Feyenoord. So it will be interesting to see if Mourinho goes with the team that produced the scintillating win during weekend, or Rooney gets another chance to end his bad run.
