Director JP Dutta delivered a star-studded Bollywood movie titled Kshatriya in 1993. The movie featured an interesting cast ensemble featuring Sunny Deol, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Dutt, Divya Bharti, Meenakshi Seshadri, Raveena Tandon, Rakhee Gulzar, and Kabir Bedi. The movie was running successfully at the theatres until an incident involving Sanjay Dutt’s name brought the screening to a halt, resulting in the film’s downfall at the box office. Backed by Sunder Das Sonkiya, Kshatriya was billed as an action movie, and was high on drama and emotions. The audience loved the movie and it also received much appreciation from critics as well. Due to its successful run at the theatres, it was expected that the movie would emerge to be a blockbuster, but, unfortunately, the movie could not earn much.
As per reports, Kshatriya was made with a budget of Rs 5 crore. Reportedly, it opened to Rs 45 lakh and minted around Rs 2 crore 80 lakh in the first week. Three weeks later, the screening of the movie was stopped due to Sanjay Dutt’s name getting involved in the 1993 Bombay bombings case. Even though the movie had a bumper opening, Sanjay Dutt’s arrest led to a ban on the screening of the movie, which affected Kshatriya’s box office performance.
Kshatriya had a record-breaking number of artists working together in the movie and was completed in exactly a year. It was scheduled to be released on November 20, 1992. Due to a break out of communal riots, two days before the release of the movie, all movie screenings were stopped for at least four weeks and no movie could be released till March 1993.
After the Khal Nayak actor went to jail, the movie collections saw a steep decline. The star-studded movie could have been a super hit at the box office as the audience loved the script and the performance of the actors. Kshatriya was the last movie that saw Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt together on screen. Previously, the duo had worked in Krodh and Yodha.
