New Delhi: Thailand registered their first ever win in regulation time in the Asian Cup when they beat Oman 2-0 in a Group A tie in Bangkok on Thursday.

Substitutes Pipat Tonkanya and Teerathep Winothai, both of whom came in the second half, were the star for the co-hosts as Thailand almost booked their place in the quarter-finals.

The win gave Thailand two more points and now they are on four points. Oman have just one point from the two games and would need to beat Iraq in the final group game and also hope that other results go their way if they have to have any chance of progessing in the tournament.

There was not much goal mouth action in the first half as both teams played cautiously but the pace changed in the second half with Thailand doing more of the attack.

Thailand coach Chanvit Polchovin Chanvit's move to bring in forwards Tonkanya and Winothai gave Thailand the much needed boost and the first goal came in the 69th minute when Winothai, who replaced Kiatisak Senamuang, crossed the ball to an unmarked Tonkanya who had no trouble in finding the nest from close range.

The second goal came in the 77th minute and it was once again the duo Tonkanya and Winothai that did all the damage.

Oman's Argentine coach Gabriel Calderon was disappointed as his team was given four yellow cards.

However, he conceded that his team was not up to the mark.

"The referee made mistakes, but Oman didn't play good," Calderon said.
