London: England will play Germany in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on August 22 in their first match-up in six years, the Football Association confirmed on Thursday.

The two countries have not met since England defeated Germany 5-1 in Munich in September 2001 in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.

Germany was the last country to play at Wembley before the stadium was rebuilt, beating England 1-0 in another World Cup qualifier in October, 2000. That loss prompted England coach Kevin Keegan to quit.

The new Wembley opened in March, and England will play their first game there on Friday, in a friendly against Brazil.

The German soccer federation had announced the fixture in December, but the FA only confirmed the match on Thursday.

The match will be the last friendly before England play their last five qualifying games for the 2008 European Championship.
