India hockey legend PR Sreejesh recently called time on a storied career with a second straight Olympic bronze medal. Sreejesh, nicknamed ‘The Wall’ will go down in history as one of the greatest hockey players to have represented India.
The former Indian custodian shared a ‘heartwarming letter’ he received from Prime Minister Narendra Modi which celebrates his ‘remarkable career’.

“Received this heart-warming letter from @narendramodi Sir on my retirement. Hockey is my life and I’ll continue to serve the game and work towards making India a power in hockey, the start of which has been made with the 2020, 2024 Olympic medals. Thank You PM Sir for your faith in me,” Sreejesh posted on X while sharing a copy of the letter.
Sreejesh has wasted no time in starting his second innings post-retirement having taken up the role of coach for the junior men’s hockey team.
“It was a dream, definitely because when I was a kid, when I started hockey, I only heard about all this rich history of Indian hockey, the medals we got in the Olympics and all those big stories. But I had never seen any such a thing in front of my eyes,” Sreejesh said after India defeated Spain to clinch the bronze medal in Paris last month.
Hockey India, in Sreejesh’s honour, retired his jersey no. 16 from the senior national team. The governing body for the sport in India also organised a farewell ceremony to celebrate the star’s achievements during his memorable 18-year career.
