When you have no time or money to run to the store, you can give your table a unique, cozy, and personalized flair. Simply make placemats from your fabric stash or scrap bag by putting your sewing machine to work.
Decide on the size. Cut two rectangles in the desired mat size plus 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) on all sides to allow for seams.
Position the fabric for sewing. Sew the two rectangles with printed or "right" sides facing together, leaving a 3–4 inches (7.6–10.2 cm) open unstitched space for turning.
Remove corners for turning. Miter the corners by cutting a wedge off each corner. This helps the placemat lie flat for the next step.
Pull fabric through the open unstitched space. Turn it "right" side out
Flatten the seam allowance at the opening. Slip stitch the opening closed.
Add finishing stitches. Top stitch around the perimeter. Use a zig zag stitch with contrasting thread for a decorative touch.
Congratulations! You have just sewn a placemat!
