Making the Filling for Regular Burritos
Cook some meat or tofu. If you want a heartier meal, pick a protein to add to your burritos. You can go with things like ground turkey, beef, chicken, pork, or tofu. Simply season the protein of your choosing and then roast it in the oven, brown it on the stovetop, or cook it in a slow cooker. Seasoned ground beef is a quick and easy burrito filler. You can also cook a pork shoulder in your slow cooker for a flavorful carnitas. You can season the meat with ingredients like cumin, paprika, chili powder, cayenne pepper, garlic, and lime juice.
Include some veggies. For some added flavor, you might want to add some vegetables to your burrito. To make a fajita burrito, you can stir-fry some peppers and onions. Although it is not technically a vegetable, you can also add some corn to the burrito for some extra filler. If you want to spice up your corn, consider using a corn salsa in your burrito. However, make sure that it is not too runny.
Add some beans. Another great source of protein that you can add to your burritos is beans. If you want a quick addition, you can add a spoonful of canned refried beans to your burritos. For a healthier option, you can cook whole beans and then add them to the burrito. If you want to go meatless, just add a couple of different types of beans, such as black or pinto beans. Instead of using canned beans, you can cook dried beans, which are less mushy and tend to have a fuller flavor. They also do not have the preservatives of canned beans.
Steam some rice. Adding some rice to your burritos adds a nice texture and flavor to your burrito that will help keep you full. Simply steam or boil the rice of your choosing until it is soft. You can add some plain white rice to the burrito or make Spanish rice for some extra flavor.
Cooking the Filling for Breakfast Burritos
Make scrambled eggs. Eggs are a healthy breakfast staple. They provide you with some much needed protein and are a great source of healthy nutrients. For your burritos, you will want to scramble your eggs, which will prevent any foodborne illness and make them easier to ladle into a burrito. You can scramble your eggs plain or add salt and pepper for some extra flavor. In addition, you can whip in some milk or cream to make them extra fluffy.
Cook the meat. Breakfast meats are one of life’s purest pleasures. For some added deliciousness, consider cooking bacon, sausage, or ham for your burrito. For a healthier option, consider turkey, chicken, or tofu-based breakfast meat products instead of pork.
Prepare some potatoes. Potatoes add some consistency to your breakfast burrito that will help keep you full. You can fry them on the stovetop or roast them in the oven. You can also add pre-made frozen potatoes to you burritos or you can make your own hash browns. If you are frying or roasting the potatoes yourself, consider adding onions and green peppers for a classic potatoes O’Brien. You can also substitute sweet potatoes for a more flavorful and healthy morning meal. Consider using white-skinned sweet potatoes, which will get less mushy when cooked.
Assembling Burritos
Get some tortillas. The key to a great frozen burrito is the right tortilla. You will want to get a large tortilla that is capable of holding the ingredients that you will be adding. If you buy them at the grocery store or make them yourself, you will want a flour tortilla that is at least 8 inches (20.32 cm) in diameter. Look for flour tortillas, which are flexible enough to hold a lot of ingredients. Plus, they freeze and reheat well. When you are at the store, look for tortillas that have “burrito-sized” on the packaging. For a healthier option, you might consider whole wheat or spinach tortillas.
Let everything cool to room temperature. In order to avoid getting a soggy burrito, you should let all of the ingredients, including the tortillas, cool down to room temperature. This will ensure that the moisture from the hot ingredients does not condense inside of the burrito, making it soggy and gross when you reheat it. Once you finish cooking everything, let the fillings cool on your counter for about 30 minutes. If you keep your tortillas in the refrigerator, be sure to take them out and allow them to thaw before you wrap the burritos. If they are cold, your tortillas will likely crack when you go to wrap them.
Sprinkle on extras. Once everything has cooled, you can sprinkle some shredded cheddar cheese, add some diced roasted chilies, or squirt on a little hot sauce. As long as it will freeze and reheat well, you can add whatever you would like. However, you should avoid adding anything that is too watery, so consider adding chunky salsas that are not very runny. Avoid things that will not freeze or reheat will, like sour cream, avocados, or lettuce.
Roll the burritos. In order to fill the burrito properly, add about one spoonful of each ingredient to the center of the tortilla and then sprinkle on your toppings. This will ensure that you are able to roll the burrito closed tightly without spilling any of its contents. To roll a burrito, pinch in the sides of the tortilla, fold in one end, and roll it closed. If you are unable to close the burrito, consider spooning out some of the ingredients.
Freeze the burritos. Wrap each burrito in tin foil, plastic wrap, or wax paper. After you wrap them, place the burritos in freezer bags. You want to try to get the burrito as airtight as you can to prevent freezer burn and help it last longer.. Once they are frozen, your burritos will be good for up to 3 months.
