New Delhi: Two days before the season six of the Indian Premier League begins, Kingfisher airlines employees have planned to stage a protest on Monday. Many of them are planning to hold a protest outside the Delhi residence of cricketer Virat Kohli.
Kohli is the captain of the Bangalore Royal Challengers, a team owned by Kingfisher Chairman Vijay Mallya. Employees claim they haven't been paid their salaries for over 10 months now.
The IPL is facing protests in other states too. Maharashtra Opposition leader Vinod Tawde has objected to the use of water in stadiums in the drought-hit state.
Tawde argues that pitch maintenance in these stadiums will consume 60,000 litres of water every day. "As per my knowledge, 60,000 litres of water would be used to maintain a cricket ground every day. Thus, during the entire season of IPL matches spread over 36 days (from April 9 to May 15 in Maharashtra), 21.6 lakh litre water will be used for a single ground," Tawde said in a letter to IPL chief Rajeev Shukla.
While acknowledging that the IPL matches would help the state government earn some revenue, he asked whether it would be appropriate to waste so much water on organising IPL matches when several parts of Maharashtra were facing drought. "Taking into consideration the plight of the drought-affected people, I hope that you will take an appropriate decision on holding the IPL tournament(in the state)," the BJP leader said.
