The first thing that comes to our minds when we think of superhero movies is lavish locations, incredible VFX and an extravagant production scale. Made on a meagre budget of Rs 40 crore. Teja Sajja’s film HanuMan had minimal of these but turned out to be a blockbuster, earning close to Rs 330 crore at the box office.
HanuMan is a superhero movie, high on content and a more grounded approach, punched with a dose of mythology, all of these making it extremely relatable to audiences. The movie was released on January 12 and has had a glorious run at the box office. If you missed the movie in the theaters, you do not need to worry as the film is soon about to make its OTT debut. HanuMan will start streaming on Zee5 from March 2 onwards, as per reports.
HanuMan combines mythology, science fiction, and fantasy. The main character of the movie, played by Teja Sajja, is Hanumanthu, a small-time thief from the village of Anjanadari, who sets out to save both his home and the entire world after finding a totem that gives him special powers. According to director Prashanth Varma, he was motivated to make the movie by the mythological characters he came across while studying history in school because he was a keen student of their tales.
Now that Zee5 will stream the movie from March 2, the movie will be critiqued more elaborately. The viewership on OTT is a completely different beast altogether. It frequently happens that a few films that thrilled theatregoers may not appeal to OTT movie buffs. There are a few issues with HanuMan in the second part that could be more noticeable on an OTT viewing. The same thing happened with the Kannada film Kantara which got a good response during its theatrical run but got many of its flaws amplified once it started streaming on OTT. It remains to be seen how well HanuMan is received by the OTT audience.
