BANGALORE: “It has been a hundred years since the Wright Brothers flew the first aircraft,” said Prof K Chattopadhyay, Divisional Chairman of Mechanical Sciences, Indian Institute of Science.Addressing High School students on the occasion of ‘Wright Brothers Day’, he told them the story of how aerospace engineering began. He explained that the builders of the first aircraft used all the engineering tools available back then.The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) in association with the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science decided to celebrate ‘Wright Brothers Day’ on Monday to mark the 100th year of flying. They organised a one-day workshop for the children of Corporation High School, Yeshwantpur and Adarsha High School to acquaint them with the history of aerospace technological evolution.“Wright Brothers Day is ideally celebrated on December 17 all over the world. But this is the first time, it is being celebrated in IISC,” said Prof.Chattopadhyay. The workshop titled ‘One day workshop on unmanned aerial vehicle design’ aimed at informing students about the significance of the day and also conducted a flying demo of autonomous and controlled aircrafts at the IISC air field.“See what people have done and go beyond that. But remember that creativity is nothing unless it is wedded to knowledge and engineering, “ said Prof. Chattopadhyay.
