Mumbai: Even after 14 years, a petition filed by a resident of Santa Cruz in Mumbai on flooding remains unanswered. After incessant rains hit Mumbai on Thursday night Gautam Rao's home has been water logged.
Rao said, "In 2001 we filed a writ petition. There is continuous flooding here. There is encroachment of catchment area by slums. With our petition BMC spent Rs 14 crore and they are planning to build six pumping stations. Which is going to complete next year. It has taken BMC 14 years to do something for the problem."
The city has received 35 mm rain in just 5 hours since Friday morning. The rainfall has led to water-logging in several parts of the city, with areas like Kurla, Sion, Matunga, Hindmata, Jogeshwari and Andheri being the worst affected. The downpours inundated low-lying areas and also caused water-logging of railway tracks.
Local train services also had to be stopped due to the torrential rains leaving thousands of commuters stranded. The services have been restored now. The heavy rain has also caused largescale disruption in the vehicular traffic bringing the city to a grinding halt.
More rainfall has been predicted for the next 24 hours. The civic body of the city has pressed about 120 pumps into service to clear the excess water from the roads.
