CHITTOOR: Saturday may be the World Disabled Day, but it made no difference to two teachers who mercilessly beat up a mentally-challenged youth to the point where passersby had to intervene and rescue the youth who was screaming for help. Police promptly booked the duo and put them behind bars. What is more tragic, however, is that the two are supposed to be the care givers at a home for the mentally-challenged, ‘Vikasa Kendram’ run by an NGO in Tapovan Complex. The duo, Muthyalu Chetty and Subramanyam, wanted to send the victim, E Poornachander (16), to do menial jobs for them at their houses located nearby. However, Poornachander refused to obey their orders. Enraged, they summoned him to a room and started raining blows on him with sticks. Writhing in pain, the youth started screaming and caught the attention of passersby who rescued him. When rebuked, the teachers tried to cover up alleging the youth had got drunk and that they were punishing him. But locals lodged a complaint with police who took the teachers into custody and shifted the youth to the district hospital. Divisional revenue officer O Seshaiah ordered an inquiry.
