New Delhi: The central government has admitted that 24 protected monuments in the country have ‘disappeared’ due to encroachments. Of these perished monuments, 11 are in Uttar Pradesh alone.
While replying to a written question in Parliament, Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma informed the House that the ministry had spent more than Rs 700 crore in the conservation of centrally protected monuments.
Of the 11 encroached monuments in UP, three are in capital Lucknow and two in Varanasi. In Lucknow, squatters from the famous Asafi Imambara have only been removed partially.
The procedure of finding untraceable monuments involves verification of old records, revenue maps, referring to published reports, physical inspections and deployment of teams.
Over the years, the government has started to make greater use of technology to identify prohibited and regulated areas. Using technology and maps, the government grants permission for constructions with these areas.
Earlier, the Archaeological Survey of India had signed an agreement with the Indian Space Research Organisation to use satellite imagery to identify such sites.
