Grenoble (France): French border police discovered 30 illegal Indian immigrants crammed into a small truck that passed into France through the Mont Blanc tunnel under the Alps, a judicial official said Thursday.

Border police heard sounds coming from the back of the 6-cubic-meter (210-cubic-foot) truck Wednesday, a judicial official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. Inside, police found 30 passengers.

The migrants were natives of India, ages 16 to 30. They said they paid up to €10,000 (US$14,425) each to try to reach Belgium from India, the official said.

The group flew to Italy and used phony identity documents to enter the country, the official said. They boarded the truck in Turin, Italy in hopes of crossing through France and making it past the Belgian border undiscovered. French officials sent the 30 Indians back to Italy.

The truck's driver, a native of India who was living legally in Italy, was held in France and was expected to go before a prosecutor in the Alpine city of Bonneville on Friday, the official said.
