COIMBATORE: In a freak incident, as many as 41 girl students of the Mani Higher Secondary School at P N Palayam here, who were having lunch under an old mayflower tree, suffered injuries when two branches of the tree came crashing down on them on Wednesday. The injured girls were rushed to the G Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital. The loud thud caused by the collapse of the branches alerted other students, who rushed to the spot and rescued the girls trapped underneath.The injured girls, who were unconscious, were taken in wheelchairs to the hospital, where they were provided treatment. Two girls suffered fractures in their right hand, while one suffered a head injury.The school authorities immediately informed their parents, who rushed to the hospital. Commissioner of Police Amaresh Pujari visited the injured children at the hospital. He advised school authorities to ensure that students had lunch in the canteen in order to avoid such incidents in future.Among others who visited the injured students were AIADMK MLA T Malaravan and Chief Education Officer of Coimbatore N Anandhi.Fire services personnel, who arrived at the incident spot, cut down the tree completely. The incident has highlighted the need for safer environment for children at school, said worried parents.
