6 Rioters Killed, 5 Arrested After Violence Hits Haldwani; Curfew Partially Lifted From Outer Areas | Top Points

Amidst the raging violence in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani following the demolition of an illegally-built madrasa during an anti-encroachment drive, five people have been arrested on the basis of the investigation. On Saturday, curfew was lifted from the outer areas of this violence-hit Uttarakhand town, however it still in force in the Banbhoolpura area that witnessed arson and vandalism by a mob over the madrasa demolition.

The violence had claimed the lives of six rioters and a curfew was imposed on Thursday when violence had erupted in the Haldwani locality.

While talking about the latest development in connection to the violence, Nainital SSP Prahlad Narayan Meena said, “We have arrested 5 people based on the evidence collected during the investigation and through the CCTV footage…Soon we will arrest the others involved.”

The accused behind the incident were brought to the Kotwali Police Station on Saturday.

What Happened So Far?

• Five people involved in Thursday’s violence have so far been arrested and three FIRs registered, police said.
• Six rioters were killed in Thursday’s violence that broke out over the demolition of an illegally-built madrasa during an anti-encroachment drive, officials said.
• More than 60 people were hurt on Thursday after locals hurled stones and petrol bombs at municipal workers and police, which forced many police personnel to seek refuge in a police station, which the mob then set on fire.
• On Haldwani violence, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday said the anti-encroachment drive had been going on as per the court’s direction and the administration had notified people beforehand.
• Shops on the outskirts of the town opened on Saturday but schools remain closed.
• The residents of the Banbhoolpura area, where the curfew is still in force, are being allowed to buy essentials from time to time.
• “Patrolling is continuously being done in the affected area and the situation is under control,” Additional Director General (ADG) of Police, Law and Order, A P Anshuman told PTI.
• Internet services continue to be suspended to prevent rumours from spreading through social media platforms.
• The Uttarakhand government had put the entire state on high alert after the violence in Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura on Thursday.
