CHENNAI: As many as 85,986 applications for the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2012 were sold on day one on Friday.Anna University Vice-Chancellor P Mannar Jawahar said that as many as 2 lakh applications had been printed by TNEA. He said TNEA will be able to print any number of applications within two days if needed. He said the State had 1.6 lakh engineering seats for the undergraduate programme which had been spread across 525 management institutions and 29 standalone colleges in the State.Asked whether the number of seats would increase, he said that several colleges had applied for approval with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and if approved the figure might increase slightly. But, AICTE will approve the applications based on the respective assessment procedures set. On the number of vacant seats, he said that around 45,000 seats were vacant last year. He said 1,380 engineering seats were offered under Tamil medium instruction in the Varsity and its constituent colleges. “There are 13 colleges that offer Mechanical engineering with a total of 720 seats while 11 offer Civil engineering with a total of 660 seats”, he added.Responding to a query on the TNEA schedule, Mannar Jawahar said the applications will be issued until May 31, the last date for submission of completed applications. Further, counselling for seats under the sports quota will begin on July 1 and phase I of counselling for vocational candidates between July 3 and 7. On July 8, counselling for disabled candidates will be held while academic general counselling will begin on July 9 and will continue till August 12.
