THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It reminds you of the jaw-dropping scene of the "tree of souls’’ in the film ‘Avatar.’ A stroll from the ‘world of books’ on the Sanskrit College campus and you suddenly feel like in the midst of a dream - a lovely dream that takes you to childhood days. The big tree on the campus has turned into a ‘poomaram’ to welcome children reaching the Children’s Book Fair organised by the State Institute for Children’s Literature. A major portion of the tree has been decorated with big flowers and dragonflies, made of net, sponge etc. It also has a tree house and a number of swings. The amazing world for children, which has got all the ingredients to ignite their imagination, was created by a team of mostly students from the College of Fine Arts. Led by Sumod P M and Eldo, a team of 18 worked to created the ‘poomaram.’ Surprisingly, the team took only one-and-a- half days to complete the work. “We had to complete the work in a limited time. Otherwise, we could have done some more,” said Sumod, final year MA student at the College of Fine Arts.Adjacent to the ‘poomaram’ is another mysterious tree full of ‘bats.’ The big ‘bats’ too are made of sponge and nets. Sumod and team evolved the idea through a group discussion and the final product was the ‘poomaram.’A number of activities that attracted the attention of children were organised at ‘Poomarachottil’ as part of the book festival. Making of ‘olapeepi,’ ‘olathoppi’ etc being some of them. ‘Poomaram’ and the activities attracted a lot of fans among children and elders alike.
