New Delhi: Inmates and visitors will soon find zoos in the country a much pleasant place to live in and visit.
The over 300 zoological parks in the country are undergoing a major facelift with the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest soon going to work on an Action Plan submitted to it by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), according to Secretary Pradeepto Ghosh.
The Government also plans to invite corporates in the improvement of facilities. The work will begin from the Delhi Zoo. It will be upgraded to a research center.
"The CZA was mooting various measures to raise resources for improving facilities at the Zoo, including setting up of a national zoo research centre. It has proposed an action plan for Delhi zoo, which would be later extended to other zoos in the country," Ghosh said.
The draft action plan for restructuring the Delhi Zoo is to be first approved by the ministry of environment and forest he said adding that for funding the restructuring, participation of the private sector was also being mooted.
The plan was likely to implemented in next six months, according to Ghosh
Meanwhile, the CZA has derecognised about 90 zoos after it found that they were not following the prescribed norms.
"A proposal to close down some of these zoos was under review. We cannot take such action all of a sudden as there is the problem of housing the animals," Ghosh said.
