To create awareness on the End Polio initiative of Rotary, D 3190 had taken up End Polio pledge campaign on June 26. They collected a large number of pledges from all sections of society which were displayed on huge banner at Cubbon Park. The banner was unfurled by Padmashri Anil Kumble along with Manandi N Suresh, district governor, Rotary District 3190, Dr M K Panduranga Setty, vice chairman, WHO - South Asia Regional Organisation’s Polio Eradication and Dr P Narayana vice-chairman, National Polio Plus Committee. Over Rs 10,50,00 was collected. Kumble said, “The battle against polio needs to continue relentlessly. It is not only a medical miracle; it is an incredible act of humanity in motion.”Polio peril Nearly 25 years of relentless battle and 2 billion immunisations later, one can say the number of polio endemic countries has dropped to 4 (Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, Pakistan) from 125 countries and 3, 50,000 cases has dropped to a mere 717 globally. 1.2 million Rotarians pledged their support to International Health Agencies and Governments to eradicate Polio from the world 20 years ago. But battle against polio is not over yet. We need to give it that last push now to end polio. Appreciating this onerous task, Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged a combined US$ 555 million -- which includes Rotary’s $200 Million Challenge -all of it in support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
